Biscuits with Chocolate Gravy: A Zimmerman Family Christmas Tradition

Merry Christmas Eve, Zimmerman family!

Tomorrow the kids will wake up to presents under our space-saving Christmas tree, and even though we’re on the road in our Airstream this year, there are a few Christmas traditions we weren’t gonna give up.

One of the big ones is our annual Christmas morning breakfast, biscuits and chocolate gravy.

I got the recipe from a friend’s mom year ago, and now, nothing says Christmas morning like our favorite chocolaty, bread-y treat.

I usually buy my biscuits so I can spend the morning with the kids, not up to my elbows in flour (which really wouldn’t work in our new smaller space), and there are a ton of options from classic Pillsbury homestyle biscuits to Annie’s organic biscuits. I’ve even been looking for a gluten-free option this year.

Although I go store-bought for the biscuits, the gravy is homemade.

Here’s the recipe:

Chocolate Gravy

tablespoons of cocoa

2 tablespoons of flour

1 cup sugar

1 cup of cold milk

1 teaspoon of vanilla

2 tablespoons of butter

Mix together the first three ingredients over medium heat. Add milk and let it thicken. Add vanilla and butter. Serve over your favorite biscuits.

Enjoy!

If you’re looking for a last-minute recipe for breakfast tomorrow morning, I hope you’ll try this one out! It’s something I look forward to every year.
