Christmas Traditions We're Taking with Us on the Road

Obviously, our Christmas this year is going to look a little different.

We’re spending Christmas on the road this year in our Airstream, and we couldn’t be happier! But it does mean getting a little creative with our typical holiday traditions.

Here are the ones we’re taking on the road with us!

  1. Christmas tree

Okay, this took some creativity, but we came up with a space-saving Christmas tree solution that we’re really proud of. We still got to hang ornaments, turn on some twinkle lights, and put a star on the top!

  2. Matching pajamas

Nothing says Christmas to me more than festive matching pajamas. I’m a big pajama fan, and am known to wear my Christmas pj’s year-round, all day long. Grab our matching set here.

  3. Decorating Christmas cookies

Yes, even in our small Airstream kitchen, we’re still baking and decorating yummy sugar cookies!

  4. Christmas cards

We sent out Christmas cards, featuring a picture of us in front of our new home, our Airstream. So many of you have asked how we’ve been handling mail while we’re on the road, and don’t worry, I have a whole blog about that coming soon!

  5. Jesus’s birthday cake

We will be baking Jesus a birthday cake for Christmas day. We always have, and it’s one of the kids’ favorite traditions!

  6. Santa Picture

My mother-in-law loves having pictures of the kids with Santa! Each year, the day after Thanksgiving, she sets out the Santa grandkid pics. This year, we’ll be finding a Covid-safe Santa experience so we can keep the tradition going.

  7. Cookies for Santa + reindeer food

Santa is still visiting the Airstream, so we will still be leaving cookies and reindeer food out for Santa and his helpers on Christmas eve.

  8. Biscuits and chocolate gravy

Every Christmas morning, we have biscuits and chocolate gravy. If you don’t believe me, check out this blog with our gravy recipe which must be from five years ago— no boys! This is a non-negotiable.

  9. Stockings

We’re still hanging our stockings and filling them with fun, small gifts and treats.

  10. Gifts!

Of course, the kids are still getting gifts. Will they be getting a Barbie Dream Mansion or a trampoline? No. But we’re still doing Christmas gifts!

There are of course things we’ll be sad to miss, like the candlelit Christmas eve service at our home church, or our annual Christmas party with friends.

But I always ask myself, what am I willing to give up now to get what I really want?

And this year, I’m exactly where I want to be, with the people I love most.

Let’s be honest— isn’t that the best Christmas tradition of them all?
