Valley of Fire State Park Travel Guide

Valley of Fire Nevada State Park looks like a melted creamsicle popsicle, with rust sandstone outcroppings amongst a grey and tan limestone backdrop.

It is remote and stunning. To see even more of what we explored, check out our travel video of Valley of Fire State Park and keep reading below all the details of what we did.

Valley of Fire State Park Quick Stats

Size: 40,000 acres

Location: Southeastern Nevada

Park Established In: 1935

Best for: taking time off the grid, hiking, camping

WHAT TO DO:

HIKE! This is a hiker’s paradise! So many amazing hikes. We did at least one every single day.

WHAT WE DID:

We camped and hiked, enjoying our time off the grid. There is no cell signal or internet so you must make sure you have a map— like a physical map or at least a downloaded map on your phone— and you must prep before you go. I recommend bringing firewood so you can have a nostalgic campfire with all the gorgeous red rocks in the background.

If you’re looking for a comprehensive guide to Valley of Fire, we did basically everything on this list and loved it all.

WHERE TO STAY:

The Valley of Fire is perfect for real-deal camping if that’s what you’re looking for. I truly believe anyone can enjoy a camping experience here, but it’s essential to go in well-informed. Check out some Valley of Fire camping information here.

WHERE DID WE STAY?

If you’re home is on wheels like us, we stayed at Arch Rock Campground which was beautiful, but still definitely off the grid! This is not a KOA experience.

Here’s more info on the campground, and you can check out some helpful photos here.

Where to Eat:

You should know by now that we love embracing local life through the meals we eat when in a new town.

But here, the destination is remote and the purpose more about enjoying the environment than checking out the best greasy spoon breakfast spot.

We totally embraced the camp life here. I suggest stocking up at a grocery store before and grabbing all the meals and snacks you’ll need and just enjoy the beauty of being unplugged.

Playground:

This whole place is a playground!

Souvenir to Pick Up:

We have a National Park Passport that we get stamps in for all the National Parks. We noticed Nevada has its own passport for state parks, but I just decided to go ahead and keep all our stamps, regardless of whether it was a state park or national park, in our National Parks Passport. I like having everything in one place for this adventure and not having to keep up with tons of things.

Also, the Valley of Fire State Park stamp is a big horn sheep. We wanted that prominently displayed.

Major Thumbs Down:

For us, with Stella still needing to do zoom classes in the morning four days a week, it was a bit of a bummer to have to drive 25 minutes or so to get internet reception. But that’s the price of this lifestyle sometimes! And really, it’s totally worth it.

Is this a fun park for kids?

Yes, there are so many benefits to hiking with kids. It’s a great opportunity to teach real life lessons about risk and safety. It also allows them to be in nature, be creative, and to create their own adventure.

There are so many great things to stop and explore, so the kids get to be in charge of what they want to explore. A hike is kind of a kid’s curiosity playground. They get to jump on rocks, play in a puddle, ask tons of questions, etc.

Here’s what I take on every hike.

Thanks for the fun, Valley of Fire!
